Fellowship in Perioperative Medicine at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust.
This is a 6 - 12-month post linked to the perioperative medicine module in the advanced curriculum. It is suitable for anaesthetic trainees in ST6 or ST7.
Derriford Hospital runs a well-regarded pre-operative assessment clinic incorporating high risk patient and shared decision-making consultations. The CPET service is supported by a Clinical Physiologist and there is ample opportunity to gain experience in the performance and interpretation of tests. Attendance at multi-disciplinary team meetings ensures a rounded experience of the patient pathway.
Further experience in the intra-operative care of high-risk patients is widely available across a range of surgical specialties, including upper-gastrointestinal, hepato-biliary and vascular, as well as through the expected service provision by participation in the general theatre on-call rota. Liaison with the Acute Care Team facilitates experience in post-operative follow-up.
Opportunities for Quality Improvement projects and engagement with research will be supported. Links with Plymouth University ensure that Fellows will be able to undertake teaching roles if desired.
