Combined ICU/Anaesthesia SIA in Torbay - Research & Managing Data
Torbay and South Devon NHS Trust is a research positive trust that has recently undertaken moves to expand and support local, national and international research. We are funded for dedicated consultant time to support research in anaesthesia and critical care, this lends itself very well to running an SAI for trainees interested in research.
Our anaesthetic and critical care departments are supported by a specific team of dedicated research nurses and there are abundant opportunities to join the team and develop transferable skills such as leadership, team working and management that would stand out very nicely when filling in consultant application forms! We are currently involved in over 10 multicentre RCTs, covering both anaesthesia and intensive Care and are in the process of setting up an in-house pilot RCT.
The research module also enables you to engage in the process of identifying, asking and answering questions that may instruct in the future development of our speciality.
There is some flexibility to shape the SIA according to interest however it would involve:
- Formal recognition of research training from the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Associate PI scheme in studies that department is currently running
- Step by step guidance on statistical analysis and coding on R, we offer a formal course and in house mentoring by Dr John Carlisle
- Support in funding applications for local and national research grants as well as ethic approval boards
- Involvement in higher level trust meetings regarding research
- Opportunities and support for national and international presentations
- Opportunities for developing “home grown” research projects
